Knowing in Arts & Humanities: Lost in the Archives: How is Knowledge Preserved

Instructor: Leah Holz
Offered Fall and Spring Semesters
What happens to our memories after we die? What impact will we have on future generations? Have you ever wondered about stories that have been lost to time? We will explore the preservation and sharing of knowledge, memories, and stories across generations, and investigate what might get lost along the way. We will begin with course topics and materials centered on the nature and values of knowing in the arts and humanities. We will then dive into case studies and examine subversive ways of sharing knowledge in order to understand and analyze whose voices are transmitted and who has the power to make archival decisions. Course topics will include: oral storytelling, memory and trauma, virtual archives, lost stories, and unconventional collections.
