In many ways, music helps define who we are. It marks generational differences, creates modern tribes and subcultures and pushes mass culture in new directions. In the modern world, fresh and innovative artists are prized and sought after. However, we rarely look into the complex elements that stimulate musical evolution. Often it is the risk takers, the musical renegades, whose creative innovations eventually find their way into the mainstream and who change the very notions of what is “musical” and “pleasing to the ears.” But how does this process take place? How do these movements get started and how do they affect our lives? What are the necessary historical conditions that need to come together to launch a new genre and to spark cultural movements?
