Offered Fall Semester. Honors Constructive Communication Across Difference Foundation Course

How does science actually work and who gets to decide what counts as “good” science? In this Honors seminar, STEM students explore how scientific knowledge is produced, debated, and communicated during moments of uncertainty and crisis. Grounded in the Constructive Communication Across Difference (CCAD) curriculum, the course develops students’ ability to engage across differing perspectives with curiosity, evidence, and intellectual humility. Students will examine how misinformation, disinformation, and competing interpretations of data shape public understanding of science. Through structured dialogue, debates, and public deliberation exercises, they will practice communicating complex scientific ideas in ways that inform without alienating diverse audiences.

As an Honors experience, the seminar emphasizes experiential and dialogic learning. For example, students will participate in a “Living Library” event, engaging directly with scientists, communicators, and community members who bring contrasting perspectives on controversial scientific issues. The course culminates in a final project in which students design and produce a podcast episode featuring an interview with a scientist or stakeholder. This project requires students to develop a focused line of inquiry, formulate meaningful questions, and communicate scientific ideas clearly and constructively across difference.
