Criminal Conversations – Communicating Across Differences in the Legal World
Instructor: Nathan Hansen
Offered Fall Semester. Honors Constructive Communication Across Difference Foundation Course
The legal world is a scary place filled with accusations, complex rules (riddled with exceptions), and “legalese” which seems almost purposefully designed to confuse. This course challenges students to explore all sides of our legal system that responds to criminal violations of the law. Discussions will debate case studies, hear perspectives from prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judicial officers about the roles they serve and how varying types of communication are involved. The importance of listening and deliberately attempting to understand how to best respond will be deeply explored. Students should hope to have a better sense of communicating effectively and gaining an insight into our state’s courts.
