Dark Timelines: the Dystopian Imagination in Literature and Film
Instructor: Mitch Macrae
Offered Fall semester only
Dystopian narratives explore the possible logical extremes to emerging cultural, technological, or environmental crises. Such narratives provide compelling intersections of entertainment, philosophy, political engagement, and cultural anxieties. In this course, we’ll discuss and analyze a wide range of dystopian narratives from literature, film, comics, and other forms of pop culture. We’ll study how these dark timelines might offer glimmers of hope and possible strategies for resistance. Or they may serve as dire warnings of the futures that may await us if we fail to intervene. What parts of our humanity can survive under repressive regimes? And what parts of our humanity might be lost if the conditions that lead to dystopian futures are unresisted?
