Instructor: Rachel Kiemele
Offered Fall Semester. Honors Constructive Communication Across Difference Foundation Course
“Without community, there is no liberation.” -Audre Lorde.
“The family we make is as important as the family that makes us.” -Malkia Deviche Cyril.
“Other people are ours to care for.” -Mia Birdsong.
This course explores what it means to “show up” for ourselves and others in meaningful, equitable, and community-centered ways. Together, we’ll explore the work of local nonprofits through site visits, guest speakers, and hands-on volunteering to examine the impact of dominant narratives about individualism and success, and reimagine how care, connection, and interdependence can shape stronger communities. Using a framework that emphasized constructive communication across difference, you will develop the interpersonal skills and mindsets needed to build authentic relationships and contribute to collective well-being.
