Identity in Action: Communication, Connection and Culture of Care Restorative Practice
Instructor: Patricia Vigil
Offered Fall Semester. Honors Constructive Communication Across Difference Foundation Course
The most difficult questions we are asked are Who am I and What is my Purpose? This course examines how identity, constructivist communication, and socialization shape human behavior, relationships, and social systems. Grounded in psychological theory, restorative justice values, and a constructivist learning approach, students will explore the development of self concept and self esteem, the role of relationships in learning, and the importance of empathy and cultural responsiveness.
Students will build a psychological and historical knowledge base related to bias, oppression, discrimination, social stigma, privilege, and liberation in the United States. Socialization theories, identity development models, and restorative justice frameworks will guide our exploration of how individuals and communities learn, internalize, challenge, and repair social norms and harm. Through experiential learning and cooperative engagement, students will develop critical consciousness, personal agency, and the skills needed to act as informed self-determining agents.
