Offered Fall Semester. Honors Constructive Communication Across Difference Foundation Course

In this class we will explore communicating across difference against the backdrop of cultural influences. We will go beyond the usual food, fun, and festivals that so often define cultural experiences in our society and, study instead, the invisible dimensions of culture and socialization (Individualism V Collectivism, Time Orientation, Power Distance etc) that underpin the logics of communication. Students will develop cultural awareness and intelligence so they can recognize cultural patterns in real-time -and adapt their style to ensure their message is received as intended, without compromising their own authenticity. For this, we will use simulation games and validated instruments to assess students’ individual intercultural development progress, and conflict and communication style preferences so they can receive tangible feedback and create goals for continued growth.
