Science in Dispute: Communicating Across Difference in Controversial Issues
Instructor: Laura Daniels
Offered Fall Semester. Honors Constructive Communication Across Difference Foundation Course
Why do scientific issues spark such strong disagreements? And how can we communicate more constructively when they do? This Honors seminar uses the Constructive Communication Across Difference framework to examine controversial topics in science and the human perspectives that shape them. Students will investigate issues where science, values, and society intersect, learning to listen across viewpoints, ask better questions, and communicate complex ideas. A key component of the course includes engaging directly with diverse stakeholders through interviews. Students will synthesize their findings into a professional research poster, gaining experience in both scholarly inquiry and public communication. This course emphasizes dialogue as a tool for understanding, not just persuasion.
