In addition to supporting their students toward increase engagement and participation in the Honors program and the CSU community, Honors Peer Mentors serve as role models for who demonstrate the value of fostering community, connection, and a sense of belonging to our new first year Honors students.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Participate in required honors peer mentor training in the spring (approximately 2 hours) and fall semester (6 – 8 hours).
  • Attend the Honors Ram Welcome the week before fall semester begins to welcome their incoming students.
  • Co-faciliate, including planning and grading, an HONR 110 recitation during the fall semester.
  • Participate weekly in self-reflection on your facilitation and experience.
  • Estimated time commitment:
    • Training: spring (approximately 2 hours) and fall: week before semester and Ram Welcome (6-8 hours).
    • Additional bi-monthly meetings and online training modules will be required as ongoing training.
    • Co-facilitating your recitation (50 minutes weekly).
    • Lesson planning, grading, and communicating (individual meetings, check-ins, etc. with students) (2 hours weekly).

  • Exemplify academic integrity, responsible decision making with a vested interest in CSU and their students’ success.
  • Be an Honors student in good academic standing (3.0 GPA minimum).
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Shows empathy, emotional intelligence, and a growth mindset.
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude.
  • CSU Honors students come from across the world and represent a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, linguistic, socio-economic, geographical, and political perspectives – prospective mentors should embrace and celebrate this diversity.
  • Interest in developing leadership, facilitating, and mentoring experience.

Benefits for Honors Peer Mentors

3 hours/week during fall semester plus training hours and Ram Welcome.

  • $14.50/hour for new Honors Peer Mentors ($15/hour if you choose to serve more than one year).

    1. Once you submit your application and it is reviewed, you will be sent a sign-up link for an in-person interview.
    2. Interviews will be conducted February 26th – March 8th. Offers will be extended by March 18th.
