Communicating Science Across Difference: Building a Sustainable Future
Instructor: Akiko Nakamura
Offered Fall Semester. Honors Constructive Communication Across Difference Foundation Course
How can we communicate complex scientific challenges in ways that truly connect across differences? From climate change to green chemistry, today’s most pressing global issues are not just scientific—they are human, requiring us to share ideas clearly, thoughtfully, and across diverse perspectives. Starting college is a time to explore not only what you know, but how you communicate what matters, especially when others may see the world differently. This Honors seminar explores how science connects to global sustainability through real-world challenges such as green chemistry, climate change, and environmental sustainability.
Using a systems thinking approach, you will learn to see the bigger picture—how environmental, economic, and societal systems are interconnected, and how actions in one area can create ripple effects in others. The course is designed to help you practice communicating scientific ideas with clarity, empathy, and critical thinking. The goal: to help you communicate science in ways that inform, connect, and build bridges across difference.
